Did you know that you and I have the same name
Small world! I had used the name years back when I was a worse artist and Geocities was king. Decided to use it again when I started a tumblr. Hope there aren’t any problem. Mainly just use it as I love drawing and the band “Queen”
As predicted in an earlier post, I got sick, so art is delayed. Sucks. BUT that’s why I said I planed on having 31 piece by months end instead of one a day. …Also didn’t help that I thought of the 31 idea at 11:45 on the last night of September. So it never was to begin with.
But the game is still on, more costume stuff soon. Then back to the normal doodles as I try to gear up for a horror comic tie in for a movie my brother in law is making.
I did storyboard for the last one he did, so it’s been fun doing stuff with the new side of the family.
But for now, just working on feeling better, resenting my day job and hopefully not being all sick and stuff at the Rock and Shock Horror con this weekend.
They were cheap, uncomfortable and I loved them all.
Halloween is still my favorite holiday. I say “still” because Crom knows retail has tried to kill the joy out of everything. If you’ve ever walked into a Halloween store and saw a 10 and under “slut” costume and you know exactly what I mean.
I joked originally about doing an art jam making fun of the “sexy” version of costumes that cropped up over the past few years. The thing is, while I am loathe to use the term “hate” for an inanimate object. I HATE them. I mean really you guys I hate them SO much.
And even if I could get past that for arts sake, when you make and sell a “Sexy” V for Vendetta costume unironically in 2010, I can’t make something stupider up.
Then I remembered my childhood, I remember going K-mart and the like at Halloween. And what I remembered most of all were the Ben Cooper costumes.
The uncomfortable masks that were somewhere between off model to grade A nightmare fuel. The almost garbage bag level plastic oversuits. Usually with a picture of the character that you were supposed to be on the front.
But every year I couldn’t wait to see the new ones… even if I was probably just going to be Superman or someone from Star Wars for the thousandth time.
And thinking about them made me realize how much I missed them.
It was fandom at it’s purist. You were your hero for one night a year. Didn’t matter if it was perfect, you were happy. And that’s why for a month I want to bring that back.
That’s what that 31 days of (Ben) Cooper is about. Just having fun at Halloween again. While I can’t promise I will have one a day, I plan on having at least 31 by the end of the month. Modern favorites, missed opportunities, web comics, movies, tv here and a far. Everything is up for grabs. But I can always use a little help.
You can either tweet me your suggestions @philken7 or better yet make your own “costumes” and post them under #31daysofBen. Lets bring the fun back, one character at a time.
